The Georgia Department of Labor’s identity verification project for state unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic has won a State IT Recognition award from the National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO). Presented on October 12, the Georgia Department of Labor (Georgia DOL) won for the Business Process Innovations category at NASCIO. Georgia’s innovative partnership with ID.me upgraded the department’s fraud prevention abilities while continuing to provide benefits for thousands of Georgians.

In 2020, the Georgia Department of Labor faced an enormous challenge. The state needed to deliver expanded unemployment benefits to residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was also beset with a wave of fraudulent claims. In September 2020, Georgia DOL implemented ID.me identity verification to help process claims. The Georgia Department of Labor found that this project blocked as much as $10 billion in potential fraud and lowered workforce agency costs.

The 2021 NASCIO Awards were given to 10 winners from 110 submissions for 2021. At NASCIO, Georgia DOL and ID.me gave a joint presentation highlighting the efficacy of the solution which can be viewed here:

ID.me is proud to have helped Georgia DOL achieve this honor.
